A woman in glasses and a green T-shirt sits on the grass in plastic gloves holding a dye bottle as a student in a green tie-dye Gottschall Access Program shirt leans in to help.

ACCESSIBILITY

ACCESSIBILITY

Community Autism Resources (CAR) serves people of every age and every level of support needed. This website should work for all of them, whether you use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, enlarge your text, or need things to stay still on the page.

What we aim for

We work toward Level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, the standard most organizations use to measure how accessible a website is.

What we’ve done

  • Plain language. We write in short, direct sentences and spell out every acronym the first time it appears on a page.

  • Strong contrast. Our colors were chosen and tested so that text stays easy to read against its background.

  • Described images. Photos carry written descriptions, so people using screen readers know what’s in them.

  • Less motion when you ask for it. If your device is set to reduce motion, the site cuts back its animations.

  • Real people testing it. A colleague who uses a screen reader reviews our assistive technology materials, and autistic members of our team review the wording that decides who a program is for.

Where we’re still working

Some parts of the site come from other services, including our donation form (Givebutter), event registration and intake forms (JotForm and Microsoft Forms), maps and embedded videos. We choose these services with accessibility in mind, but we don’t control how they’re built. Some older documents may also be harder to use with assistive technology.

If anything on the site gets in your way, we can give you the same information another way.

Getting help another way

You can always reach a person:

  • Call 508-379-0371, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm

  • Email info@communityautism.org

We can read a page with you over the phone, send information in a format that works for you, or register you for an event directly. If you need an accommodation at an event, call or email us before the event and we’ll work it out with you.

Tell us what isn’t working

If something on this website is hard to use, we want to know. Tell us the page, what you were trying to do and what got in the way. Your feedback goes to a person, and we’ll get back to you.
