About Community Autism Resources

Thirty years ago, families here had an autism diagnosis and almost nowhere to take it. So they made somewhere.

01

The beginning

Nobody set out to build an organization.

What those first families had was each other: a parent who’d been through it, on the phone with a parent who was just starting. One family worked something out and passed it on, and the next family did the same.

02

What it turned into

The programs came the same way.

Someone would ask for something that didn’t exist yet, and instead of pointing them somewhere else, we built it. When the young adults in one program reached the end of it with nowhere to go next, the next program was the answer. We’ve never called ourselves autism experts. The people living it are the experts. Our job is to listen closely enough to build what they need.

03

Why it still works this way

We stayed independent on purpose.

In a big agency, autism is one department among many, competing for everything. Here, it’s the whole reason we exist. It also means the people in every program work side by side, so when you’re ready for something new, they already know you.

04

The people

Some of us have been here a long time.

Seven of us have been doing this work for more than ten years, and two for more than twenty. So the person who answered when your child was two, and the word autism was four days old, might still be here when he’s twenty-six and learning to live on his own. You don’t have to explain yourself all over again. Someone already knows the story.

How the service area works

Our service area is set by our contracts with the state, so its edges follow the state’s lines, not always the ones you’d expect. Attleboro is in. Foxboro, right next door, isn’t.

It goes by home address. Where you work, go to school or see a doctor doesn’t change it.

If you live outside it

Call us anyway.

Massachusetts has autism support centers for every region of the state. Tell us your town and we’ll tell you which one serves it, so you’re not starting over on your own.

And wherever you live, anyone can call us with a question.

Events

Our events follow the same service area. Enter your ZIP code on the calendar to see the ones open to you. If you’re outside the area, we’ll show you where to look closer to home.

Inside it, you’re welcome at any event, wherever it’s held. A family in Braintree can come to one on the Cape.

The same service area applies to every program. If your town is on the map, the next step is finding the program that fits.

COME WORK WITH US

Open roles show up here when we have them. Until then, if you’d like to work with us, send a note through the form below.

Contact us

One number.

A person answers, or calls you back.

You don’t need a diagnosis, a referral, or the right words for what you’re dealing with. If what you need doesn’t have an obvious home on this site, this is the right place to ask.

Looking for a specific program?

Every program page has its own contact: the person who runs it. If you already know which one you need, that’s the shorter route.

Hours

Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.

Some days we’re out running a workshop or at a resource fair, so your call may go to voicemail. Whether you call, email or stop by, if we miss you we’ll get back to you within 24 hours, or 48 over a weekend.

Email

info@communityautism.org

Email any time, including after hours. There’s also a form at the bottom of this page.
